Many of Celeste Emelia Mattingly, LCSW’s clients in the West Hartford, Avon, Farmington, Bloomfield and the surrounding areas in CT, MA and RI, have sought out therapy at Psychotherapy Healing Services, LLC in order to receive the empathy and emotional support they needed during life’s more turbulent times. Sometimes, however, a client’s source of emotional difficulty turns out to be rooted in their biochemistry. At least ten percent of the population will struggle with a biologically based mental illness at some point in their lives, and Celeste is adamant there is no shame in having a chemical imbalance in the brain. She also corrects the many misconceptions surrounding mental illness. Celeste understands that when a person has mental illness, they cannot simply “snap out of it”; they are battling an illness the same as any other, and need qualified help to recover from it. Some of the disorders Celeste treats are:
Those who suffer from mood disorders often blame themselves for their inability to control insurmountable depression, erratic mood swings, and other emotional difficulties. Celeste Emelia Mattingly, LCSW knows mood disorders are often misunderstood because their symptoms may be interpreted as signs of laziness or bad behavior. In fact, clients who suffer from these disorders are often capable, energetic and warm individuals when their illness is properly treated. If you suspect you may have Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, or any other Mood Disorder, it is important to seek swift treatment at Psychotherapy Healing Services, LLC.
Clients who suffer from these disorders often experience guilt over their inability to control their sadness, unstable moods, and impulsive behavior. Well-meaning friends or family members can exacerbate this guilt by telling suffers to “cheer up”. But Mood Disorder sufferers are not able to simply stop feeling depressed or change their moods at will. These disorders have a biochemical basis and must be dealt with by a caring and competent mental health practitioner. Following is a list of the more frequent Mood Disorders treated by Celeste.
Major Depressive Disorder
You may not realize that Major Depressive Disorder occurs most frequently in adults, although children and the elderly may also be affected. Sufferers of this disorder may experience changes in appetite, reduced energy levels, difficulty maintaining their sleep cycle, irritability, difficulty concentrating, feelings of despair, guilt, and worthlessness, and persistent thoughts of suicide. You need to know that like any mental illness, Major Depressive Disorder is not the result of negative thinking or self-indulgence, but is rather a genuine mental illness caused at least partially by a biochemical imbalance. Celeste is a trained mental health professional who can diagnose this illness and help sort through any confusion clients may have regarding their condition. Celeste has successfully treated many clients at Psychotherapy Healing Services, LLC who seek assistance for this disorder. (Click here

Most folks understand Bipolar Disorder is characterized by frequent and unpredictable shifts in mood and behavior. During the “high” period, bipolar persons experience a surge of euphoria and physical energy. While this may seem ideal, it is important for folks to understand the emotions and perceptions in the euphoric phase of Bipolar Disorder form a distorted, manic caricature of true happiness. Risky financial decisions, reckless driving, and other inappropriate behaviors result from these manic episodes. A sharp downturn follows, bringing with it depression, lack of energy, confusion, fearfulness, despair and thoughts of suicide. It is important to understand that sufferers of bipolar disorder constantly struggle to navigate the endless treadmill of emotional fluctuations that may range from elation to suicidal despair within an extremely short period of time. Fortunately, BiPolar Disorder is treatable with Celeste’s combination of talk therapy, standard psychiatric and alternative healing modalities.
You may not realize that Mood Disorders do not always manifest in a dramatic display of symptoms. Sufferers of Dysthymic Disorder experience many of the challenges faced by those with Major Depressive Disorder. Low self-esteem, indecisiveness, and persistent fatigue remain. Folks need to know the danger of Dysthymic Disorder lies in its insidious ability to gradually assume control of a patient’s life before they become aware of it. Those affected by this disorder suffer needlessly often for decades, because they deny its existence. They often believe that because their symptoms aren’t severe, they shouldn’t bother to try to overcome them, and they often believe “this is just the way life is.” However, studies show that untreated Dysthymic Disorder can lead to work difficulties, unstable family relationships, and even early death. Fortunately, Dysthymic Disorder is treatable at Psychotherapy Healing Services, LLC with Celeste's combination of talk therapy, standard psychiatric and alternative healing modalities.

Panic Disorder is characterized by unpredictable panic attacks in which the sufferer may experience heart palpitations, difficulty breathing, nausea, sweating, physical numbness or tingling and other symptoms. Sufferers of Panic Disorder may fear they will die during the attacks, even though the physical symptoms of a panic attack are not life-threatening. Because the panic attacks are unpredictable and occur without warning, Panic Disorder sufferers may also develop agoraphobia, and fear places and objects connected to previous attacks. They may fear driving, exercising, being in enclosed spaces and other situations where a panic attack may embarrass them or endanger their health. In extreme agoraphobia cases, the sufferer may feel unable to leave their home. Fortunately, Panic Disorder is treatable with Celeste's combination of talk therapy, standard psychiatric and alternative healing modalities.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Sufferers of Generalized Anxiety Disorder experience high levels of stress over everyday life routines and events. Sufferers may feel overwhelmed by persistent fears of worst-case-scenarios and complain that they cannot “turn off” the stream of negative thoughts in their minds. Sufferers of Generalized Anxiety Disorder may also manifest a sense of constant alertness and anticipation, similar to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The anxiety these sufferers experience, however, lacks a specific or appropriate source. Physical symptoms can include irritability, headaches, muscle spasms, inability to concentrate or relax, being easily startled, excessive sweating of hands and feet, and sleep disturbance. Fortunately, Generalized Anxiety Disorder is treatable with Celeste’s combination of talk therapy, standard psychiatric and alternative healing modalities, she provides at Psychotherapy Healing Services, LLC.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD is a disorder suffered by those who have undergone or witnessed a violent or life-threatening event. War veterans and/or survivors of motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, rape, assault, and child abuse may be experiencing PTSD. Symptoms of this illness include “flashbacks” in which the survivor relives the incident, nightmares, angry outbursts, thoughts of hurting oneself and others, and feelings of emotional numbness, helplessness, and despair. Physical symptoms such as headaches and upset stomach may also manifest, particularly among children with the illness. Many with PTSD feel shame concerning their illness and suffer in silence. Fortunately, PTSD is treatable at Psychotherapy Healing Services, LLC with Celeste Emelia Mattingly, LCSW’s combination of talk therapy, standard psychiatric and alternative healing modalities.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder, often referred to as “OCD”, is an Anxiety Disorder that will affect roughly three percent of the population at some point in their lives. OCD sufferers are plagued with unwanted and obsessive thoughts, and will respond to these obsessions in a compulsive manner. Obsessions common to this disorder include fears of bacterial contamination, forgetting to lock the door or turn off the stove before leaving home, and harming oneself or others. The obsessive thoughts are accompanied by compulsions of hand washing, repeated checking of doors and household appliances, counting, organizing, and repeatedly touching objects. Initially, the compulsive actions provide temporary relief for the OCD sufferer. However, the anxiety quickly returns, and compulsion rituals soon become so elaborate and repetitive in nature that they become debilitating and completely overwhelm the patient. Fortunately, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is treatable.

Whatever decline in functioning the user may be experiencing Celeste is qualified to determine the appropriate level-of-care for the addict to get help.
Although it is true that drug and alcohol problems often start in adolescence, everyone needs to understand that SUBSTANCE ABUSE DISORDERS can affect anyone at any point during the course of their lives. Addiction crosses all barriers of age, race, class and gender. Contrary to popular opinion, one does not need to be physically addicted to a mind-altering substance in order to have a Substance Abuse Disorder.
